Artist Statement
“I’ve never wanted to harm wildlife—only to honor it. Every elk, bear, or mountain lion I paint carries a
memory, a sense of awe, and a moment of stillness in the wild. My work is my way of preserving that spirit and sharing it with others. Through oil painting, I’ve found a voice that lets me speak without words—to tell the story of what it means to truly see and respect the animals that share our world.”
Bio
Colorado-based wildlife artist whose work is deeply rooted in a lifetime spent immersed in nature. Raised in the mountainous town of Evergreen, Colorado, Wendy grew up surrounded by wildlife—elk, bighorn sheep, bears and mountain lions were part of her everyday landscape. Her father, a world-class hunter, filled their home with big game trophies—animals and birds from all over the world, including waterfowl and native species from Evergreen. His impressive trophy room left a lasting impression on Wendy, not because she wanted to hunt, but because it deepened her fascination with the animal kingdom.
From a young age, Wendy felt drawn to capture the essence of these creatures—not with a camera or rifle, but through drawing and painting. Her talent quickly became evident, and she earned several awards for her artwork in high school. She began her formal training at Colorado State University, where some of her work was featured, but found the large class sizes uninspiring. Seeking a more focused environment, she transferred to Red Rocks Community College in Lakewood, where she devoted herself entirely to art. Her dedication led to acceptance at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, one of the country’s premier fine arts institutions.
After marrying and raising two children—whom she homeschooled after elementary school—Wendy balanced full-time work with keeping her creative practice alive. With limited time and space, she focused on drawing and woodburning wildlife, preserving her connection to art even during life’s busiest seasons.
In 2021, Wendy returned to Evergreen, drawn back to the landscapes and wildlife that shaped her identity. In 2025, she began exploring oil painting for the first time. Though new to the medium, it felt like a natural evolution—one that allowed her to more fully express the emotion, energy, and presence of the animals she holds dear.
Today, Wendy creates from her mountain studio, producing wildlife artwork that reflects not only technical skill but a deep spiritual connection to her subjects. Her work speaks to the quiet power of the wild and the artist’s unwavering reverence for the natural world. I began studying with Debra Sindt, wildlife oil painting artist, in Bailey, CO, in January 2025.
